{"id":993,"date":"2020-10-29T10:20:11","date_gmt":"2020-10-29T09:20:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.analisiclinichedipiazza.it\/?page_id=993"},"modified":"2020-10-29T16:06:35","modified_gmt":"2020-10-29T15:06:35","slug":"stis-or-sexually-transmitted-infections","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/staging.analisiclinichedipiazza.it\/en\/stis-or-sexually-transmitted-infections\/","title":{"rendered":"STIs, or Sexually Transmitted Infections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The acronym STI,<\/span><span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><strong><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Sexually Transmitted Infection<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"EN-GB\">, refers to a heterogeneous group of infections caused by pathogens acquired and transmitted mainly through sexual activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Until a few years back, STIs were called STDs: Sexually Transmitted Diseases or VDs, Venereal Diseases. The term \u201cInfection,\u201d on the other hand, is more appropriate because it underlines that many of these diseases may not give symptoms for months or even years, causing them to spread more easily among the population. This shows us how important prevention and an early diagnosis are.<br \/>\n<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Sexually Transmitted Infections may be caused by:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Virus<\/strong><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">es<\/span><\/strong>: HIV, Hepatitis A, B, C, <span lang=\"EN\">Human papillomavirus, Genital herpes, Molluscum contagiosum.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Bacteria<\/b>: Neisseria gonorrhoeae (Gonorrhea), Treponema pallidum (Syphilis), Chlamydia trachomatis (Lymphogranuloma venereum), Mycoplasma hominis, Ureaplasma urealyticum, Gardnerella vaginalis.<\/li>\n<li><b>Fungi<\/b>: Candida albicans.<\/li>\n<li><b>Protozoans<\/b>: Trichomonas vaginalis.<\/li>\n<li><b>Ectoparasites<\/b>: Pubic lice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">When present, symptoms of STIs are often aspecific; some vaginal discharge may occur, pelvic pain, itching, pain during urination and\/or sexual intercourse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The diffusion of some of these pathogens may be prevented by vaccination, for example Hepatitis B, a disease which if not treated may cause cirrhosis of the liver or even hepatocellular carcinoma, or Papilloma virus, which may cause benign lesions such as genital warts, but also cervix, penis and rectal cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">For other pathogens for which vaccines are not available, it is highly recommended, besides adopting a behaviour which reduces the risk of contagion (for example using condoms), to undergo regular screening in order to detect the presence of a specific virus or bacteria before it causes irreversible damage to the organism or is unwittingly transmitted to other people.
